The 80th Anniversary of the Vow to Our Lady: A Letter from Pope Francis
On the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the vow made in Rome in front of the Marian icon ‘Salus Populi Romani’ after the city was liberated from the Nazis, Pope Francis has written a special letter to commemorate the event. This marks the first time this event has been remembered in such a way, as the Pope addressed his letter to the Viceregent of Rome, Auxiliary Bishop Baldassare Reina.
Back on 4 June 1944, when the city of Rome was facing the imminent threat of destruction by the German army during World War II, the people of Rome, along with Pope Pius XII, prayed to Our Lady for salvation. Now, 80 years later, Pope Francis sees this as an opportunity to pray for the victims of the war and to reflect on the devastating impact of conflicts.
“We cannot and must not give in to the logic of weapons!”
The Pope emphasized the importance of peace and reconciliation, urging individuals to become everyday peacemakers. He highlighted that peace is a gift from God that requires active engagement from individuals who are willing to build bridges and promote harmony.
Throughout his pontificate, Pope Francis has shown a deep devotion to the Marian icon ‘Salus Populi Romani’. He often visits the icon at the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore and uses it as a symbol of hope and peace in his liturgies.
Reflecting on the role of the Virgin Mary in Roman history, the Pope noted how the image of Maria Salus Populi Romani has been a source of comfort and strength for Romans during times of adversity, including wars and natural disasters. The image holds a special place in the hearts of the people, symbolizing their faith and resilience.
The Peaceful Liberation of Rome in 1944
On 4 June 1944, Rome was liberated from Nazi occupation in a peaceful manner, defying expectations of a violent clash. The Vatican played a crucial role in negotiating with the German forces to declare Rome an ‘Open City’, ensuring its safety and preservation.
As we commemorate this historic event, let us remember the power of faith, prayer, and unity in overcoming conflicts and restoring peace. May the vow made to Our Lady 80 years ago continue to inspire us to work for a world free from violence and division.
