The International Day of Innocent Children Victims of Aggression
Today, 4 June, marks the International Day of Innocent Children Victims of Aggression, a day established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1982 to raise awareness about the pain endured by children worldwide who are victims of physical, mental, and emotional abuse.
According to UNICEF, one billion children around the world have experienced some form of violence, highlighting the urgent need to address this global issue.
Children in Conflict
In 2022, over 8,630 children were killed or maimed, with a significant increase compared to the previous year. The use of explosive weapons and recruitment of children in armed conflicts remains a major concern, with thousands of children suffering from abduction, sexual violence, and denial of humanitarian aid.
Bambino Gesù Hospital’s Commitment
On this day, Bambino Gesù Pediatric Hospital emphasized its support for abused minors, particularly those affected by war trauma. With over 40 years of experience in caring for children who have experienced violence, the hospital remains at the forefront of providing specialized care and support.
Domestic violence against children is also a pressing issue, as highlighted by UNICEF Italy’s short film ‘House of Terror.’ The film sheds light on the harrowing experiences of children subjected to abuse within their own homes.
Protecting Children from Conflict
Moving forward, the UN emphasizes the need to end and prevent grave violations against children, urging a collective effort to eliminate factors that contribute to their involvement in armed conflicts. Protecting children from harm and ensuring their safety is a shared responsibility that requires immediate action and global cooperation.
On this International Day, let us reaffirm our commitment to safeguarding the innocence and well-being of every child, and strive towards a world where all children can grow up free from violence and aggression.
