Addressing the Neglected Crisis in Burkina Faso
For the second consecutive year, Burkina Faso has been named the world’s most neglected displacement crisis by the Norwegian Refugee Council. With approximately 2 million displaced individuals in the country, the situation continues to worsen as aid remains scarce.
According to the report released by the Norwegian Refugee Council, Burkina Faso tops the list of neglected crises globally. The criteria for determining neglect include insufficient humanitarian funding, lack of media attention, and inadequate international political and diplomatic initiatives.
The Growing Crisis
Marine Olivesi, advocacy manager at the Norwegian Refugee Council, emphasized the deteriorating situation in Burkina Faso. With a sharp increase in violence-related deaths in 2023, over 8,000 lives were lost, making it the deadliest year since the conflict began 5-6 years ago.
Calls for Action
The Norwegian Refugee Council advocates for increased international support and media coverage for neglected crises like Burkina Faso. With a decline in funding and attention, urgent investments are needed to address the escalating humanitarian crisis. Olivesi stresses the importance of diplomatic efforts and financial aid from donor countries to bring relief to those affected by conflict in Burkina Faso.
