When we commune with Jesus, we are communing with someone who lived and died for others. His body and blood were given for the salvation of all. This message from the Episcopal Subcommittee for Charitable and Social Action of the Spanish Episcopal Conference reminds us that on the feast of Corpus Christi, the Church celebrates the Day of Charity, which is at the core of Christian life. It calls us to be witnesses of God’s compassion for every brother and sister.
The Spanish bishops invite us to embody charity in our daily lives with the message titled “Where you need us, we open the way to hope.” They urge us to become like bread, broken and shared among those who are hungry, in need of justice, and lacking in dignity.
Human dignity in crisis
The bishops recognize the wounded state of our world, plagued by shadows that hinder universal brotherhood. They point out that conflicts, wars, migration issues, and inequalities due to globalization challenge human dignity. The ecological crisis and climate change also threaten our common home. Even in Spain, poverty and exclusion persist as structural issues beyond the economic situation.
The situation in Spain includes severe exclusion scenarios, job insecurity, homelessness, and a disadvantaged child and youth population. The bishops call for action to address these pressing issues.
Where the last ones need us
Celebrating the Eucharist means aligning with Jesus and his vision for a more compassionate world. It challenges us to choose between being indifferent bystanders or active Samaritans who extend a helping hand to those in need.
Christianity calls us to show love and compassion wherever it is required, just as Jesus did when he felt compassion for those around him.
Paths of brotherhood and hope
Since 2004, Charity Day has been a reminder of our duty to walk the paths of fraternity, fostering a society that defends the dignity and rights of every person. The priorities include reaching out to the impoverished, working for the common good, and spreading seeds of goodness.
The charitable and social actions of volunteers reflect the love of neighbor, selflessness, and service. Their dedication is essential in building a better society where everyone feels valued and cared for. Let’s continue to spread love and hope through our actions!
