Over 2000 people are feared dead after a devastating landslide swept through six villages in the highlands of Papua New Guinea. The disaster struck in the early hours of Friday 24 May, catching the population off guard as they slept. The Desperate Search for Survivors
The landslide completely razed several villages to the ground, burying families alive in what has been described as the worst massacre the country has seen in decades. While at least 670 people have been confirmed dead so far, authorities believe the actual death toll may be much higher according to the National Disaster Centre at the UN.

UN Secretary General, António Guterres, expressed deep sorrow over the tragic loss of lives and pledged support from the United Nations and its partners to assist the government in rescue and recovery efforts.
