The plastic surgeons, gathered in Rome for the AEXPI meeting, were commended by Pope Francis for their noble work in aiding sick children and providing compassionate service.
Highlighting the theme of “When science meets beauty”, the Pope emphasized that their work as doctors and Christians extends far beyond just physical appearance.
True beauty, according to the Pope, is not confined to external aesthetics dictated by fashion trends. Instead, it is rooted in the inner truth of a person, their essence that should not be distorted.
Referencing Saint Paul, Pope Francis noted that our faces should reflect the glory of the Lord, transforming us into His likeness through love and actions. He urged the surgeons to let this profound truth guide their practice, ensuring that their work not only heals but also uplifts and reflects the divine image within each individual.
In a poignant paradox, the Pope spoke of Jesus as both the most beautiful among men and also marred by suffering. This paradox, he explained, reflects the journey to eternal glory through the acceptance of our weaknesses and embracing the hope that does not disappoint.
