The Diocese of Tombura Yambio in South Sudan has sadly declared its missing priest, Fr Luke Yugue Mbokusa, and his driver, Mr Michael Gbeko, officially dead.

In a heartbreaking audio statement released by Vatican News, Bishop Eduardo Hiiboro Kussala of Tombura Yambio Diocese confirmed the news of the priest and driver’s passing.
The Search Continues
Despite the deep sadness and heavy hearts, the Diocese will hold official Funeral Prayers for Fr. Luke Yugue and Michael Gbeko from 23rd to 25th May 2024, culminating in a funeral Mass on 25 May 2024 at St Mary, Mother of God Catholic Parish. Bishop Kussala reassured the parishes that the search for truth and justice will persist even during the funeral period.
Appeal for Calm
Bishop Kussala urged the community to remain calm and uphold the principles of faith and let the legal system take its course. Vigilante revenge is discouraged in favor of forgiveness and justice.

The Bishop referenced biblical teachings to discourage acts of retaliation and emphasized the importance of upholding peace and faith in the midst of tragedy.
Military Intervention
Following the disappearance of Fr. Luke and his companion, Major General James Akech was sent by South Sudan President Salva Kiir Mayardit to restore peace in Tombura at Bishop Kussala’s request.
Priest Abductions in Nigeria
In a separate incident, a Nigerian priest, Father Oliver Buba, was abducted following the recent kidnapping of Father Basil Gbuzuo. The wave of abductions in Nigeria, including priests and pastoral workers, has led to a crisis where ransom payments are becoming increasingly exorbitant.
The scourge of kidnappings by various criminal groups continues to plague Nigeria, causing untold suffering to families and communities.
