During the meeting, Cardinal Fernández conveyed greetings from Pope Francis and highlighted the importance of the declaration Fiducia supplicans published by the Vatican Dicastery. The Coptic Holy Synod’s statement regarding “same-sex marriage” was a central point of discussion. The Synod’s declaration and the subsequent doctrinal statement, Dignitas infinita, emphasize the belief that marriage is a sacred union between a man and a woman, open to the transmission of life, and reject the idea of “same-sex marriage”.
The Prefect of the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith explained to Pope Tawadros II that the Catholic Church shares the same teachings as the Coptic Synod’s declaration and supports its pastoral approach. The meeting also discussed the significance of Fiducia supplicans and clarified that blessings can be given to individuals but should not be confused with marriage rites.
Furthermore, the meeting delved into the historical, cultural, and social context of the Egyptian people, shedding light on the unique perspective of the Coptic Orthodox Church. Cardinal Fernández also engaged with other religious leaders during his visit to Cairo, fostering important dialogues on matters of faith and doctrine.
This landmark meeting underscores the importance of inter-faith conversations and the significance of upholding traditional values within the religious community.
