Text of the Holy Father’s video message
Dear brothers, dear sisters,
I am delighted to greet all of you on this special occasion dedicated to the Centenary of the Concilium Sinense. This historic event, the First and only Council of the Chinese Catholic Church, took place in Shanghai between May and June 1924, exactly 100 years ago.
The Conference, titled “100 years since the Concilium Sinense: between history and present”, holds significant importance for various reasons.
1) The Concilium Sinense marked a crucial milestone in the journey of the Catholic Church in China. The Council Fathers gathered in Shanghai a century ago experienced true synodality and unity, making important decisions collectively.
2) Archbishop Celso Costantini played a pivotal role in leading the Concilium Sinense, emphasizing the Church’s mission to evangelize, not colonize.
3) The legacy of the Council of Shanghai continues to guide Chinese Catholics today as they actively participate in promoting social harmony and contributing to the common good.
4) As we reflect on the Council of Shanghai, we are reminded to look to the future with hope and courage, seeking new paths to proclaim the Gospel boldly in the present.
As we celebrate the month of May dedicated to the Virgin Mary, Chinese Catholics embark on a pilgrimage to the Shrine of Our Lady of Sheshan, seeking her intercession for peace and blessings.
Let us join in prayer with our brothers and sisters in China, entrusting all our hopes and aspirations to Mary, Help of Christians, for peace to prevail in our world.
May Mary, help of Christians, Our Lady of Sheshan, intercede for us all.
