Tracing Picasso’s art journey through his drawings and etchings
Pablo Picasso, the iconic Spanish artist, has brought his mesmerizing artworks to Rome. The Galleria Nazionale will showcase over 300 of Picasso’s masterpieces until 5th November 2023. The collection includes intricate drawings, geometric designs, still life compositions, and numerous portrayals of women.
The exhibition, curated by the esteemed Fernando Castro Flórez, features a remarkable selection from the Museo Casa Natale Picasso di Malaga. This exhibition is part of the international celebration honoring the 50th anniversary of Picasso’s passing, known as the “Año Picasso”. It also serves as a tribute to Picasso’s lasting legacy in Rome, reminiscent of the artist’s 1953 showcase at the same Galleria Nazionale. Visitors can explore official correspondences, photographs, press releases, and newspaper clippings from the original exhibition, providing a unique insight into Picasso’s world.
Picasso’s graphic artistry was truly exceptional, capturing themes that ranged from women’s portraits to depictions of artistic history.
Curator, Fernando Castro Flórez

The exhibition showcases Picasso’s drawings dating back to 1905, offering a holistic view of his creative process. These drawings form the foundation for many of Picasso’s renowned oil paintings.
Among the notable etchings are pieces like Salome and The danza barbara from 1905, as well as a series of 29 etchings inspired by Ovid’s Metamorphoses and illustrations for Balzac’s The unknown masterpiece. Particularly striking are the two etchings depicting Sueño y mentira de Franco, reflecting the turmoil of the Spanish Civil War.
Picasso’s fascination with women is palpable throughout the gallery, with varied iterations of female figures like Francoise Gilot, Dos mujeres desnudas, and Jaqueline Roque.

Picasso’s ever-evolving style and relentless creativity remain timeless and recognizable, a true testament to his artistic genius.
