Welcome Back to the Parish: Fr. Gabriel Romanelli’s Return to Gaza
After more than seven long months, Fr. Gabriel Romanelli, the parish priest of the Latin-rite Church of the Holy Family in Gaza, has finally returned to his parish. His return was made possible by the visit of Patriarch Pierbattista Pizzaballa to the area last week.
Since October 7, 2023, Father Gabriel Romanelli had been away from the Holy Family Catholic Church in Gaza City. His departure was postponed by just one day, but that day turned out to be the start of the Israel-Hamas war, preventing his return. However, he was finally able to come back during Cardinal Pizzaballa’s visit.
The Joy of Returning Home
During his absence, Gaza has faced immense devastation, with countless lives lost and many facing grave humanitarian crises. In the midst of this suffering, Fr. Romanelli expressed his joy at being able to return to his parish alongside Cardinal Pizzaballa. “I am in the parish and will stay here,” he promised, grateful for the opportunity to be back with his community.
Accompanied by Fr. Carlos Ferrero and a nun from the Institute of the Incarnate Word (IVE), Fr. Romanelli shared his determination to support the people of Gaza during these challenging times.
Despite the Destruction, Serenity Prevails
Despite the destruction surrounding them, the people of Gaza have shown remarkable serenity. Fr. Romanelli observed, “The situation is paradoxical; there is serenity among many of our parishioners. Despite the truly enormous suffering, they remain serene and place themselves in the hands of the Lord.”
The parish, with the help of 500 Christians taking refuge in the compound and the Sisters of Mother Teresa, extends their support not only to their own community but also to their Muslim neighbors.
Pope Francis’ Continued Support
Fr. Romanelli shared that Pope Francis provides continual support and comfort to the Christians in Gaza, urging them to protect the children and persevere in their mission. He prays for peace in the region and hopes for humanitarian aid to reach those in need.
As Fr. Gabriel Romanelli settles back into his role at the Holy Family Church, he remains dedicated to bringing hope and support to the people of Gaza, echoing the words of Pope Francis in his quest for peace and healing in the region.
