The Hospitaller Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus have chosen Sister Idília Maria Carneiro as their new Superior General for the 2024-2030 period, during the XXII General Chapter in Rome, running from April 24 to May 26.
“After a process of discernment, the community of sisters has elected me as Superior General. I am grateful for your prayers and support during this chapter, and I look forward to leading us on this journey of hospitality and service to those in need,” Sister Idília Maria Carneiro expressed her gratitude to the hospital community.
She emphasized the importance of growing in hospitality to bring hope and service to the most vulnerable, especially those facing mental health challenges. “Your prayers and dedication are invaluable as we continue this mission together,” she added.
Hospital experience
Born in Mozambique in 1966, Sister Idília joined the Hospitaller Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in 1984. Her journey includes a degree in Social Work, a master’s in Spirituality and Ethics in Health, and a postgraduate degree in Human Resources Management.
With a background in hospital management and mission support, she previously served in various leadership roles within the Congregation, contributing significantly to the hospital mission in Portugal.
Her recent role as Provincial Vicariate involved overseeing the Hospital Centers in the Province and leading the Hospital Mission. Sister Idília’s leadership has been instrumental in advancing the Congregation’s commitment to healthcare and hospitality.
A family at the service of Hospitality
Sister Idília succeeds her sister, Sister Anabela Carneiro, who led the Congregation for two consecutive terms. Their shared dedication to the mission of serving those in need has been a testament to their family’s commitment to hospitality.
Sister Anabela’s tenure was marked by remarkable achievements, including significant contributions to healthcare during the Pandemic and the revitalization of the Hospitaller Sisters’ mission through the revised Constitutions.
