Welcome to Roma Daily News Radio
Greetings from the newsroom! This is Giuliano Ferrigno here with the latest international updates. Today, we begin with the escalating conflict between Ukraine and Russia. Over 10,000 people have been evacuated from the region under attack by Moscow’s troops. There are concerns that this assault may just be the beginning of a wider offensive. The Ukrainian president has rejected any Olympic truce proposed by Putin and has requested the US to support them in using weapons against Russia.
Meanwhile, in Italy, emotions ran high as Kiko Forti, who was recently released from a Florida prison after serving 24 years, landed in Rome. He was greeted by Giorgia Meloni and is now headed to serve the remainder of his life sentence in a Verona prison. The Pope’s helicopter also landed in Verona today, marking the start of a day-long visit to the city.
On the economic front, Italy’s GDP grew by 0.3% in the first quarter of 2024, despite contractions in industrial production and consumer spending. The tourism sector is thriving, but challenges in global trade, high energy prices, and soaring interest rates are impacting overall confidence.
