The Viet Nam-Holy See Joint Working Group Meeting: A Renewal of Good Relations
Amidst an atmosphere of cordiality, frankness, and mutual respect, the Viet Nam-Holy See Joint Working Group met in Ha Noi on Friday, 17 May. A statement released by the Holy See Press Office following the meeting reaffirmed the strong bilateral relations between Viet Nam and the Holy See, emphasizing the continued inspiration of the Catholic community in Viet Nam by the teachings of the Church.
The meeting, the first one since the conclusion of the Agreement between Viet Nam and the Holy See on the Status of the Resident Papal Representative, was a fruitful exchange of views on various issues, including the Catholic Church in Viet Nam.
Upholding Freedom of the Church
Co-chaired by Le Thi Thu Hang, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Monsignor Mirosław Wachowski, Under-Secretary for Relations with States, the meeting highlighted the importance of the freedom of the Church in Viet Nam to fulfill its mission for the betterment of society. The Catholic community in Viet Nam was acknowledged for its commitment to living out the teachings of the Church while also being active members of society.
Advancing Relations
The progress in Viet Nam – Holy See relations was recognized by both sides, attributing it to regular consultations and exchanges, high-level delegations, and the work of the Resident Papal Representative, Archbishop Marek Zalewski. Before leaving Viet Nam, the Holy See delegation also had the opportunity to meet with Vietnamese Authorities and Archbishop Joseph Vũ Văn Thiên of Ha Noi.
This meeting marks a significant step towards strengthening the relationship between Viet Nam and the Holy See, paving the way for continued dialogue and collaboration.
