Wednesday 15th May marked the commencement of the KAICIID ‘Transformative Dialogue’ conference, an event that brings together religious and political leaders in the vibrant city of Lisbon, Portugal.
A prestigious lineup of speakers, including the Patriarch of Constantinople, the Imam of the Grand Mosque of Mecca, and three former European heads of state, graced the conference with insightful ten-minute talks.
The Power of Dialogue
Dr Zuhair Alharthi, the Secretary General of KAICIID, highlighted the significance of dialogue in a world marked by escalating distrust. Former President of Austria, Dr Heinz Fischer, quoted Karl Popper to emphasize the collective approach towards truth. Patriarch Bartholomew I of Constantinople stressed the spiritual duty in fighting climate change, while Imam Salih bin Abdullah al-Humaid underscored the role of dialogue in combating extremism and hatred.
The Mayor of Lisbon, Carlos Moedas, reflected on the positive impact of the Pope’s visit to the city during World Youth Day, emphasizing the unifying influence of religion that was palpable throughout the community.
The Role of Women
Graça Machel, a prominent Mozambican politician and humanitarian activist, emphasized the imperative role of women in negotiations for harmony and enduring peace. Drawing from the Kenyan national dialogue history, she showcased the transformative outcomes when women are inclusively engaged in shaping public policies.
The Fundamental Role of Spirituality
Khushwant Singh, representing the International Partnership of Religion and Sustainable Development, delved into the inner transformation needed for sustainable solutions to societal challenges. He highlighted the essence of spiritual growth as a profound and essential aspect of life.
