“Do not cast me off in my old age” (cf. Ps 71:9): These heartfelt words from Psalm 71 serve as the theme for the upcoming World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly. Pope Francis has chosen this theme for the Day, which is organized by the Dicastery for Laity, Family, and Life.
In his Message for the Fourth World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly, Pope Francis emphasizes the importance of the elderly as the firm foundation upon which new generations can build. He refers to them as essential components for creating a spiritual edifice, drawing from 1 Peter 2:5.
Facing the Fear of Loneliness
In his message, Pope Francis acknowledges that the certainty of God’s presence in every stage of life is juxtaposed with the fear of abandonment, particularly in old age and times of suffering. This stark reality is reflected in the words of the Bible and resonates strongly with many.
Loneliness is a common companion for many elderly individuals. Factors such as children emigrating, war-torn environments, and cultural misunderstandings contribute to this sense of isolation. Pope Francis highlights the urgent need to address these issues and combat the prevailing attitudes that devalue the elderly.
Challenging the Status Quo
Pope Francis draws parallels between the story of Naomi in the Book of Ruth and the modern-day experiences of many elderly individuals. Just as Ruth refused to abandon Naomi, we are called to challenge societal norms and show compassion and support to the elderly.
The Holy Father’s message concludes with a powerful call to action: to reject self-centered attitudes that lead to loneliness and instead embrace a path of compassion and solidarity. He offers his blessings and prayers to all grandparents, elderly individuals, and those who stand by them in their journey.
Let us heed Pope Francis’ words and strive to honor the infinite dignity of every individual, regardless of age or circumstance. Together, we can build a more inclusive and compassionate society for all.
