Welcome to the Roma Daily News radio journal, an afternoon from the editorial office by Francesco Vitali in the studio. Germany has rejected the request for a new Ukrainian fly zone by NATO’s military branch and has not changed its position, a government spokesperson said on Monday. The spokesperson stated, “We rejected this request at the time and I think the same applies to the various requests that have been made.” This morning in a court in Milan, the trial of Alessia Pifferi, the woman accused of letting her 18-month-old daughter Diana die of neglect by leaving her alone at home for six days, is ongoing. The 38-year-old woman has been in prison since July two years ago. The judges will have to determine the sentence based on the type of crime and any aggravating circumstances.
According to the main United Nations relief agency, about 360,000 people have fled from Rafah, the southernmost city in the Gaza Strip, last week. Palestinians are leaving this area bordering Egypt following Israel’s evacuation requests ahead of a major ground offensive. Meanwhile, in the northern part of Gaza, bombings and other evacuation orders have caused further displacements. Fear grips thousands of families with nowhere to go and no safety without a ceasefire.
Top U.S. officials, including Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, reiterated the Biden administration’s opposition to Israel’s invasion of Rafah, foreseeing that a ground offensive will lead to numerous civilian casualties.

Turning back to school, the decree on cohesion brings some new features. Marcello Pacifico, the national president of the ANIEF union, discusses finding resources to extend the contracts of more than school collaborators until mid-June. The decree also allocates funds for disadvantaged schools and to co-finance existing projects, not only for the technological sector but also for other areas, such as gyms. ANIEF sees these resources as a first step and aims to secure more funding to recruit and extend contracts for administrative and auxiliary staff until 2026.
