The Forma Urbis Romae: An Ancient Marvel Now Open to the Public
The Museo della Forma Urbis has just unveiled its doors to the public on January 12, 2024, within the stunning new Archaeological Park of the Celio. Visitors are now able to witness the recovered sections of the marble-engraved map of ancient Rome, a treasure that has been hidden from public view for nearly a century.
This grand opening marks a significant step in the revitalization efforts of the Celio area, as part of the redevelopment program initiated by the city of Rome. With the collaboration of Jubilee Interventions, the showcase in the Archaeological Park of Celio sets the stage for a series of upcoming exhibitions featuring a diverse range of historical artifacts.
Unveiling the Forma Urbis Romae
The Forma Urbis Romae is a remarkable marble map carved between 203 and 211 AD during the reign of Emperor Septimus Severus. Originally displayed on the wall of a room in the Forum of Peace, this colossal map consisted of 150 marble slabs held together by iron pins, stretching over 18 meters by 13 meters.
Discovered in 1562, this significant historical relic had largely been lost over time, with public access restricted since 1939. Today, only 10% of the original Forma Urbis Romae remains, preserved in remarkably good condition and easily readable. To aid in understanding, the museum overlays the missing portions of the map with the “Pianta Grande,” a map created by Giovanni Battista Nolli in 1748.
This innovative approach allows visitors to walk on the layout of ancient Rome, offering a fully immersive experience that transports them to the heart of history. By standing on the glass floor, guests can gaze upon the ancient fragments below their feet, illuminating the splendor of these marble pieces from centuries past.
Alongside the Forma Urbis Romae, the museum also houses a collection of architectural and decorative artifacts from the former Municipal Antiquarium, enriching the overall experience.
