Hey there, lovely souls!
During these challenging times, the importance of community and human connection has never been more evident. With that in mind, I wanted to reach out to all of you, our incredible UW Rome Center family, to provide an update from the Palazzo Pio.
As we are all aware, Italy was one of the first countries to feel the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. We have witnessed the virus spread, the government’s response, and the profound effects on the population. Like many places around the globe, life in Rome has come to a standstill, with schools, museums, restaurants, and more all shuttered, and the streets eerily quiet.
On February 29th, we had to make the tough call to suspend our winter quarter study abroad programs, sending students back home two weeks early and transitioning to remote classes. A few days later, we made the difficult decision to cancel our spring break programs as well. It was heartbreaking for us all, knowing how much our students had been looking forward to their time abroad.
But despite these challenges, we are filled with hope for the future of the UW Rome Center. Renovation work on Palazzo Pio will resume as soon as possible, and we eagerly await the moment we can welcome students back to this beautiful space. The renovation project has the potential to solidify the UW Rome Center’s position as a hub for our students, faculty, alumni, and friends in the Eternal City. You, with your deep connection to Rome, understand firsthand the transformative power of time spent in Italy. We will keep you updated on the project’s progress in the coming months.
During this uncertain time, and always, I am immensely grateful for our wonderful UW Rome Center community. I know that the COVID-19 outbreak is impacting Seattle and other places across the world. My thoughts and well wishes are with you and your loved ones, and I eagerly await the day when we can all reunite in Rome.
Warm regards,
Amity Neumeister, Resident Director
