Welcome to the 40th Anniversary Commemoration of the John Paul II Foundation for the Sahel
As we celebrate the 40th anniversary of the John Paul II Foundation for the Sahel, Pope Francis has called upon the Church to continue its mission of fostering peace and development throughout the West Africa region.
Established by Pope St. John Paul II in 1984 after witnessing the hardships faced by the population due to drought and desertification during his first Apostolic Journey to Africa, the foundation stands as a symbol of the Church’s love and solidarity for the people of West Africa.
In a letter addressed to Cardinal Michael Czerny, Prefect of the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development, Pope Francis expressed his support for the foundation and its efforts. He emphasized the importance of addressing the external deserts that reflect the internal struggles faced by individuals in the region.
Highlighting the ongoing crises in West Africa including terrorism, economic instability, climate change, and intercommunal conflicts, Pope Francis stressed the urgent need for action to address these issues and ensure the dignity and flourishing of every human being.
Calling upon all people of goodwill to work towards security, justice, and peace in the Sahel region, the Pope underlined the importance of taking immediate action to improve the situation. He concluded by expressing his hope that the commemoration of the foundation’s establishment will lead to concrete initiatives for the sustainable development and peace of the Sahel population.
Join us in honoring the legacy of the John Paul II Foundation for the Sahel and committing to making a positive impact in the lives of the people of West Africa.
