Welcome to Rome’s Tram Revamp for Jubilee 2025

Rome is gearing up for the Vatican’s Jubilee Year 2025 with a major revamp of its tram system. To facilitate the redevelopment of the Porta Maggiore tram depot, all trams will be temporarily taken out of circulation from May to October.
During this time, buses will substitute for trams, ensuring uninterrupted transportation for residents and visitors. The city’s transport councillor, Eugenio Patanè, confirmed that all six tram lines will be back in operation in time for the Jubilee festivities.
Not only will the Porta Maggiore renovation enhance the tram infrastructure, but Rome also has plans to introduce new trams next year as part of ongoing network maintenance.
In other recent developments, the number 8 tram has returned to service, with partial resumptions on the 3 and 19 lines, supported by bus services along certain routes.
Meanwhile, preparations for the Jubilee include the temporary closure of two vital Metro A stations. The Spagna station near the Spanish Steps will shut down for 80 days, and the Ottaviano station, serving the Vatican, will close for 50 days.
While specific timelines are yet to be released, the upgrades are expected to take place between spring and summer, with trains passing through the closed stations without stopping.
As the city braces for increased footfall during the Jubilee, Mayor Roberto Gualtieri has assured that the series of planned projects will significantly transform Rome’s landscape.
