Join in the festivities as Rome marks its 2777th birthday on Sunday, April 21st, known as Natale di Roma. This annual celebration commemorates the founding of Rome in 753 BC by Romulus. From parades to historical re-enactments, free museum visits, and important inaugurations, there’s something for everyone to enjoy during Natale di Roma. Explore the exciting program of events below.
Step Back in Time with Gruppo Storico Romano
Witness history come alive with the renowned historical dramatic society, Gruppo Storico Romano, as they re-enact epic battles, rituals, ceremonies, and thrilling gladiatorial fights.
This year’s theme is “ROMA: REGINA VIARUM,” with most events taking place at the iconic Circus Maximus, an ancient Roman chariot-racing stadium. Mark your calendars for the festivities happening from April 19th to 21st, 2024.
On Friday, April 19th, don’t miss the “Renewal of the Sacred Fire” ceremony at Piazza in Campo Marzio in the afternoon, followed by a special concert at Piazza della Rotonda near the Pantheon.
On Saturday, April 20th, the lineup includes:
- 2 p.m. – Opening ritual and dedication of the games at Circus Maximus
- 3 p.m. – Game of Harpastum at the Archaeological Area of Circus Maximus
- 3 p.m. – Gladiator Tournament Qualifications at Gladiators Area of Circus Maximus
- 4 p.m. – Ancient Dances at Circus Maximus
- 5:00 p.m. – Tournament between gladiator schools at Circus Maximus Gladiators Area
- 7:45 p.m. – Maurizio Battista presents “Un Sorriso per Roma” on the Circus Maximus stage
- 8:00 p.m. – Italian Army Band performance on the Circus Maximus stage
The highlight on Sunday, April 21st, is the Historical Parade kicking off at 9 am at Circus Maximus, weaving its way through Piazza Venezia and the Colosseum before returning to the starting point by 2 pm. Witness the re-enactment of the Tracciato del Solco and other captivating performances at the Circus Maximus throughout the afternoon.
