Welcome to Amsterdam: Celebrating 750 Years of Faith
Amsterdam, the vibrant and historical capital of the Netherlands, is gearing up to celebrate its 750th anniversary in grand style, starting on 27 October 2024. The city’s rich history is deeply intertwined with faith and the Catholic Church, a connection highlighted by Pope Francis during a recent meeting with pilgrims from Amsterdam.
The Pope warmly welcomed around fifty pilgrims representing various organizations in Amsterdam, including the Catholic Foundation for the Promotion of Welfare Work, the Russell family, and the Rector and Choir of Saint Nicholas Basilica. He commended their dedication to serving the marginalized in society, including the poor, migrants, and those struggling with addiction, through collaborative efforts with organizations like the Sisters of Mother Teresa and the Sant’Egidio Community.
A City of Unity and Solidarity
In his address, Pope Francis acknowledged Amsterdam as a melting pot of cultures and nationalities, united in a spirit of brotherhood and sisterhood. He praised the city’s churches as places where people from diverse backgrounds can come together in harmony, thanks to the efforts of the pilgrims present.
“Your city is also home to people of many different nationalities, called to live together as brothers and sisters. Its churches, in particular, are places where people from all social and cultural backgrounds can come together. I thank you most heartily for your commitment to making this happen!”
Encouraging the pilgrims to persevere in their good work, Pope Francis invoked the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, asking for her intercession in strengthening their faith, hope, and charity.
“I ask the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of all, to strengthen you in faith, hope and charity.”
As Amsterdam prepares to mark this significant milestone in its history, the Pope’s words serve as a reminder of the importance of faith, unity, and solidarity in building a more inclusive and compassionate society. Let us join hands and hearts in celebrating Amsterdam’s past, present, and future, guided by the light of faith and the spirit of service.
